Kalkundkiesel means “limestone and gravel,” the two soils these Blaufrankisch vines grow in, and you can taste both. Sour cherry, pomegranate, dark berry and a steely mineral edge, with juicy acidity and soft tannins that keep it light on its feet. Aged in neutral oak, unfined, unfiltered, and served best with a slight chill. Perfect with Thai larb moo or Japanese tori no karaage.

Description

A self-described low-tech, instinctive winemaker from Gols on the shores of Lake Neusiedl, Claus started with his father’s three hectares and has grown it into one of Burgenland’s most exciting biodynamic estates. Wild ferments, minimal sulphur, and a restless curiosity that made him one of the first Austrians to experiment with Georgian qvevri.
